FLOWERS BLOOM 4-6 WEEKS AFTER PLANTING. CAN BE GROWN HYDROPONICALLY, ON A BED OF PEBBLES WITH A SMALL AMOUNT OF WATER, OR IN THE BOTTOM OF A SHALLOW-FILLED DISH WITH WELL DRAINING SOIL. PAPERWHITES SHOULD NEVER BE CHILLED. TRY TO PLANT IMMEDIATELY BUT KEEP IN A WARM SPOT UNTIL YOU DO. REQUIRES MINIMAL LIGHT TO GROW, THE MORE LIGHT, THE SHORTER THE STEMS.
To plant paperwhites, place bulbs in a container with either soil or gravel, with the pointed tops exposed. For soil, plant bulbs with their tips barely showing; for gravel, place the bulbs on a layer of rocks and add more rocks to secure them, ensuring the bulbs don't sit in water. After planting, keep them in a cool, dark place for 1–2 weeks to encourage root growth, then move to a warm, sunny spot to bloom in 4–6 weeks.
Planting in soil
Fill a pot with potting soil, leaving enough space to place the bulbs.
Nestle the bulbs into the soil with the pointed end facing up, placing them closely together for a fuller display.
Cover the bulbs with more soil, leaving just the tips of the bulbs exposed.
Water the soil thoroughly to settle the bulbs.
Place the pot in a cool, dark location for 1–2 weeks to encourage root growth.
Once shoots are 2-3 inches tall, move the pot to a sunny, warm location.
Planting in gravel or pebbles
Fill a container, like a glass vase, with a 1–2 inch layer of gravel or pebbles.
Place the bulbs on top of the gravel with the pointed end up.
Add more gravel around the bulbs to secure them, leaving the tops of the bulbs exposed.
Add water to the container until it just touches the bottom of the bulbs; do not let the bulbs sit in the water.
Place the container in a cool, dark location to allow roots to form, checking the water level and adding more as needed.
Once roots have developed, move the container to a sunny, warm spot to encourage blooming.
